Abortion gag rule survives overturn bid in Queensland parliament

1 minute read

One brave government member crossed the floor to vote for a motion to flip the ban, but it was still defeated decisively.

On its first regular sitting day as the new Queensland government in December 2024, the David Crisafulli-led LNP instituted a gag on any debate about abortion.

Today, the Labor opposition and one lone LNP member attempted to overturn the ban.

Katters’ Australian Party MP Robbie Katter (son of Federal MP and veteran, Bob Katter), asked for leave to move a motion without notice to overturn the gag.

Labor has always opposed the gag, maintaining that it prevents expansion of abortion rights in Queensland.

Labor members, most of the crossbench and Mackay MP Nigel Dalton of the LNP voted for today’s motion, crossing the floor to do so.

Nevertheless, the motion was defeated, 50-35.
