Renowned pharmacist and innovator Erica Tong has joined the governance team at the Institute.

Storied innovator Dr Erica Tong has joined the board of the Australasian Institute of Digital Health, replacing Associate Professor Belinda Lange who reached the end of her term at the AIDH’s recent AGM.

Dr Tong has just been named as the director of pharmacy clinical innovations at Alfred Health, adding to her role as chief pharmacy information officer, which she has held for just over nine years.

“Erica has been at the forefront of digital health and clinical pharmacy innovation in Australia,” said AIDH CEO Anja Nikolic in her update to members.

“She has led the implementation of electronic medication management across Alfred Health. Under her leadership, Alfred Health has launched several first-in-country digital medication processes.”

Some of those processes include:

  • EMR integration with infusion pumps;
  • Automated dispensing machines (closed-loop medication management);
  • Integration with SafeScript;
  • Australian Immunisation Register;
  • ePrescribing.

“She developed and implemented a pharmacist prescribing model that has since been adopted across most Australian states,” said Ms Nikolic.

“She completed her PhD in 2020, focusing on pharmacist prescribing models in general medicine, and continues to lead clinical pharmacy services across general medicine, emergency medicine, and the ICU.

“Erica is passionate about improving patient care and medication safety through digital technologies. Her appointment brings deep clinical expertise, innovation leadership, and a strong commitment to advancing digital health outcomes.”

Re-elected to the board were Angela Ryan, the lead healthcare executive at Oracle Health, and Dr David Hansen, CEO of the Australian e-Health Research Centre at the CSIRO.
